Although mosaics have been a long standing art form, many artists have since created new and intriguing ways to make incredible designs. One of these includes photo mosaics. This technique involves using small individual photos to create a portrait or artwork.

Mona Lisa | photo mosaics
One of Da Vincini’s masterpieces, the Mona Lisa, has been hung on the walls of the Louvre Museum since 1797. It is arguably one of history’s most famous paintings since it was created in 1503. In 2019, The People’s Picture created a digital recreation of the iconic painting. This was made up of thousands of portrait photos to form the face of the Mona Lisa.
Queen Elizabeth II | photo mosaics
From a legendary painting to a legendary monarch. For 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II reigned over Britain and its Commonwealth realms with a grace that is admired by many. Her image has appeared on everything from coins to stamps, and now she can be found on a beautiful piece of mosaic art.
In 2012, The People’s Project created a particular piece labelled ‘The People’s Monarch’ commissioned by BBC South East. This mosaic depicts 2 images of the Queen – one at the time of her coronation and at her Diamond Jubilee. Measuring at 38 square meters, the photo mosaic contains 5000 photos to make up a stunning photo of the Queen.
The mosaic is made up of family snapshots, along with photos of loved ones who are no longer with us and ancestors. This incredible mosaic proves that even the most amazing designs can be created by using simple techniques.
The Snowman | photo mosaics
In 1978, Raymond Briggs wrote The Snowman – a colourful Christmas book capturing the imagination of children across the world. Then, in 1982, the book was adapted onto the big screen, of which is shown on TV every Christmas without failure.
In 2018, The People’s Picture was commissioned to create a photo mosaic of The Snowman. This was created to honour the 40th anniversary of the beautiful picture book. The People’s Picture collected around 2,626 photos to create a stunning mosaic depicting the Snowman and the boy who built him, flying through the snow.
Bobby Moore
One of England’s greatest Defenders, Bobby Moore is best-known for leading England to victory in the 1966 World Cup. Moore also holds legendary status for his club, West Ham United – who he spent 18 years with.
In 2016, West Ham commissioned the People’s Picture to create a photo mosaic mural of Moore. This was placed on the wall of their new boardroom ahead of their move to the former Olympic Stadium. The Mosaic of Moore is made up of 3,500 images of past and present West Ham players, and various images of the club’s history.
Faces of Suffrage
The suffragettes changed the face of British history, ensuring that women had the right to vote. Today, we applaud their efforts and courage in their fight for equality and giving women across the UK and world a voice.
In 2018, the People’s Picture created a 200 metre-square floor mosaic at Birmingham New Street Station. Made up of more than 3,700 images of females from across the West Midlands and beyond it was commissioned to celebrate 100 years of Women getting the vote in Birmingham. The mosaic contains photos of the women involved in the suffragette movement from the West Midlands in the early 1900s. This is combined with pictures of females today, using photographs submitted by the public.
The mosaic depicts the photo of Hilda Burkitt, a leading face of the suffrage movement in the West Midlands. In fact, Burkitt was the first suffragette to be forcibly fed – of which she reached a total of 292 times. An inspiring mosaic to compliment the persistence and bravery of the faces that helped change Britain.
